Embedded Software and
Flight Controls Engineer
UAV Design and Development
About Skymark Aerospace
Skymark Aerospace develops uncrewed aircraft systems, with projects spanning aircraft platforms, propulsion integration, and onboard sensing technologies.
Our engineering work brings mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines together to develop and test practical UAV systems.
About the Role
We are seeking an Embedded Software and Flight Controls Engineer to develop and integrate the software connecting UAV hardware, flight control, and ground systems.
You will work with electrical, mechanical, integration, and test engineers to take software from implementation through simulation, bench testing, and flight-test support.
The role combines embedded programming with flight-control integration and analysis. You will help improve aircraft behaviour, diagnose interactions between software and hardware, and maintain software releases and parameter configurations that can be tested and reproduced.
Key Responsibilities
- 01 Develop and maintain embedded C and C++ software for flight controllers, onboard computing, and aircraft hardware interfaces.
- 02 Configure and extend autopilot software, integrating sensors, actuators, propulsion interfaces, and onboard equipment with the relevant engineers.
- 03 Implement and troubleshoot communications between flight controllers, companion computers, payloads, telemetry links, and ground-control systems.
- 04 Support flight-control configuration and tuning, using simulation and test data to assess response, stability, and operating constraints.
- 05 Develop software diagnostics, logging, health monitoring, and fault-handling behaviour; verify responses to abnormal conditions.
- 06 Use software and hardware in the loop simulation, bench tests, and automated checks to evaluate changes before flight testing.
- 07 Analyse flight logs and telemetry with pilots and test engineers, investigate anomalies, and verify corrective changes.
- 08 Maintain source control, code reviews, build procedures, release records, and aircraft parameter configurations to support repeatable testing.
- 09 Document software requirements, interfaces, assumptions, and test results; assess how changes affect connected hardware and aircraft behaviour.
Required Qualifications
- 01 Bachelor's degree in Computer, Electrical, Software, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline.
- 02 Demonstrated experience developing and debugging embedded software in C or C++ on physical hardware.
- 03 Understanding of real-time software behaviour, including timing, concurrency, resource constraints, and communication with peripherals.
- 04 Experience working with sensors, actuators, or embedded communications interfaces and interpreting hardware documentation.
- 05 Knowledge of feedback control fundamentals and practical experience implementing, integrating, or testing control systems.
- 06 Experience with source control, code review, software testing, and systematic troubleshooting across hardware and software.
- 07 Ability to analyse logs and test data, document technical decisions, and coordinate work across engineering disciplines.
Preferred Experience
- 01 UAV autopilots and ground-control software, including ArduPilot, PX4, or comparable platforms.
- 02 Embedded Linux, real-time operating systems, microcontrollers, or companion computers such as NVIDIA Jetson.
- 03 MAVLink, CAN, UART, SPI, I2C, or network communications used in robotics and aircraft systems.
- 04 Flight dynamics, state estimation, sensor fusion, or development and evaluation of control algorithms.
- 05 Python, MATLAB, Simulink, or similar tools for simulation, test automation, and engineering data analysis.
- 06 Professional engineering registration or progress toward registration.
What You Will Contribute
You will help turn integrated aircraft hardware into a system with dependable, testable software behaviour.
Your work will connect implementation decisions with simulation and flight-test evidence, giving the team a clear basis for improving control performance and resolving software issues.
