Mechanical Engineer
UAV Design and DevelopmentAbout Skymark Aerospace
Skymark Aerospace develops uncrewed aircraft systems, with projects spanning aircraft platforms, propulsion integration, and onboard sensing technologies.
Our engineering work brings mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines together to develop and test practical UAV systems.
About the Role
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, and testing of UAV airframes and mechanical systems. You will take components and assemblies from initial requirements through detailed design, prototype build, and validation, working with engineers, technicians, pilots, and external specialists.
You will take components and assemblies from initial requirements through detailed design, prototype build, and validation, working with engineers, technicians, pilots, and external specialists.
The role combines analytical design with practical development. You will help resolve tradeoffs in weight, strength, thermal performance, cost, and serviceability while maintaining the drawings and records needed to build and improve each design.
Key Responsibilities
- 01 Design airframe structures, equipment mounts, enclosures, and mechanical assemblies to meet project requirements.
- 02 Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, tolerances, material specifications, and bills of materials.
- 03 Assess structural loads, stiffness, vibration, fatigue, and thermal performance using appropriate calculations and analysis tools.
- 04 Track component mass and centre of gravity contributions, and identify opportunities to reduce weight while maintaining required performance.
- 05 Integrate propulsion equipment, avionics, batteries, sensors, and payloads with electrical engineers and other specialists.
- 06 Select materials, fasteners, and manufacturing processes suitable for prototype development and repeatable assembly.
- 07 Support fabrication, prototype assembly, fit checks, and supplier discussions; investigate and resolve mechanical issues.
- 08 Develop mechanical test methods and fixtures, support ground and flight testing, and use results to improve designs.
- 09 Document design assumptions, analysis results, test findings, and engineering changes for technical reviews and future builds.
Required Qualifications
- 01 Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- 02 Demonstrated experience developing mechanical hardware through design, fabrication, assembly, or testing.
- 03 Proficiency with a parametric 3D CAD system such as SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA, or an equivalent platform.
- 04 Strong understanding of engineering mechanics, materials, machine elements, tolerances, and mechanical drawing practices.
- 05 Experience with structural calculations or finite element analysis, including checking assumptions and interpreting results.
- 06 Practical understanding of manufacturing methods and design for assembly, inspection, and maintenance.
- 07 Ability to troubleshoot hardware, explain technical decisions, maintain clear documentation, and coordinate work across disciplines.
Preferred Experience
- 01 UAVs, aerospace systems, robotics, or other equipment where weight and reliability are critical.
- 02 Composite structures, lightweight metals, additive manufacturing, or prototype tooling.
- 03 Vibration testing, thermal management, environmental testing, or investigation of mechanical failures.
- 04 Camera calibration, image geometry, small-object detection, or tracking from moving cameras.
- 05 Mechanical integration of electric propulsion, batteries, fuel cells, or related power systems.
- 06 Professional engineering registration or progress toward registration.
What You Will Contribute
You will help turn engineering concepts into working aircraft hardware and use build and test feedback to refine the designs.
The position offers involvement across multiple development stages and close collaboration with the people assembling, integrating, and testing the aircraft.
